Mission Over Manipulation

"I’ll be your best friend if you give me your cookie"

This type of manipulation worked when we were five and it still works today.

“Advertising”, as we know it, is like a non-threatening term for manipulation.

We are offered incentives like “free shipping” even when we all know that shipping isn’t free.. It’s just baked into the price.*

We get pressured into a purchase because we might “miss out”. This looks like: “Time or supply is running out” (even when it’s really not).

We get manipulated by an athlete who is “adding credibility” with their endorsement. Even though we know the athlete was paid to endorse the product.

Oh and let’s not even get started on the never-ending discounts for literally everything, every holiday, every season, blah, blah, blah.

Not to mention the actual monetary cost of the people, the agencies, the ads… All of that accounts for up to 50% of a product’s retail price.

I decided a few years ago that MNML GOLF won’t take part in that manipulation.

And yes, it has cost us hundreds of thousands in sales. Likely millions. 

But I am betting on something more long-term to drive our success.

Mission. 

I’m betting that there are enough people out there who are tired of being manipulated into purchases to find out later that the product wasn’t worth the “discounted” price they paid.

I’m betting that you are more proud of your purchase that supports a mission you’re aligned with than you are about saving 20% - again, that 20% is baked into the retail price.

And I’m betting that because MNML GOLF focuses on our mission, we will be able to create higher quality golf bags that are better for the player and the planet than we could if we were focused on manipulation tactics.
